Orthodontic Emergencies

Broken or disturbed braces or other appliances can occur from time to time during your orthodontic care. The #1 cause for such problems is eating hard or sticky foods or candies. This type of activity needs to be avoided during braces.

If you have a loose (broken) band or bracket, poking wire, lost retainer, etc., call our office as soon as possible so we can evaluate the urgency of the problem and schedule you to be seen accordingly.

Poking Wire: If a wire is irritating your mouth, temporarily cover it with a piece of orthodontic wax. Soften the wax by rubbing it between your fingers and then stick it over the end of the irritating wire. Call our Office as soon as possible so we can adjust or clip the poking wire.

Loose Band or Bracket: A loose (broken) band or bracket can generally be left in place until seen in our office for repair. Call our office as soon as you notice a loose band or bracket so we can schedule you to be seen to reattach the loose appliance.

Do not just show up at your regularly scheduled appointment and inform us of the loose band or bracket. Chances are we will not have enough time to schedule to repair it at that appointment and you will end up having to come back the next day for another appointment.

Bent Headgear Facebow: if a headgear facebow is bent and not fitting well call our office immediately so we can properly adjust it for you. We want to see you right away so you won’t lose any headgear wearing time. Remember, 14+ hours/day is the minimum required in most instances for success.

Lost/Broken Retainer: if a retainer becomes lost or broken call the office immediately so we can see you right away. Don’t wait one or two weeks to see if your teeth will shift before calling us. Chances are your teeth will shift and then we will have more extensive treatment required to correct the relapse.

Remember! It is extremely important to get a new impression taken at our office as soon as possible after retainer loss or breakage so we can prevent relapse and more involved correction.

After Office Hours

If you have an emergency after office hours or on the weekend, call the office and you will be given an emergency number to call to reach Dr. Frerichs.
